VR technology has taken over the world, and now it’s made its way into the fitness sector! More and more people are putting on their VR headsets when exercising, to combine fitness and technology in a way we have never seen before. But are virtual reality workouts just the latest technological fad, or is this new way of exercising here to stay?

What is a virtual reality workout?

Virtual reality workouts combine games with exercise. You simply put on the virtual reality headset, select your game and begin exercising. It is much more immersive than other sports based video games like the Wii Fit, as the headset makes you feel like you have stepped into the game itself. This can create a more life-like and enjoyable experience which can make exercise more playful than ever before.

However, virtual reality workouts aren’t just a game, but a legitimate form of exercise. Your body will be pushed and challenged, just like you would any other workout, as the VR element is there to assist your workout routine, not deter from it. Whether you enjoy boxing, weightlifting or cardio, you can still do all of these exercises to the level that you’re at, with just the addition of VR making it a little more fun.

What type of VR fitness games are there?

There are a whole host of VR fitness games out there so it’s imperative to find the one that works for you. The best place to start is by identifying your goals. Do you want to build muscle, lose weight, or simply want to find something fun that gets you up and moving? Answering these types of questions can help you decide what VR game to try first.

For example, if you’re looking for a VR game that’s fun but also happens to be a workout then dance games like Beat Saber or Dance Central could be for you. Alternatively, if you already have a workout routine that you love but are looking for ways to mix it up then exercise focused games like FitXR and Thrill of the Fight could be great options.

Is VR fitness a good form of exercise?

VR fitness is a great form of exercise because you are working out, whilst having a good time. This can boost your motivation because exercising will no longer feel like a chore, and instead, become an activity you look forward to doing. The more you love something, the more likely you are to continue doing it, which can help you to achieve your fitness goals.

It’s also a great option for those who don’t enjoy going to the gym as you can workout at home. Once you have cleared enough space to workout safely, all you have to do is put your VR headset on and you can bring the gym to you. Once you have grown in confidence and perfected your form, then you may feel ready to visit your local gym once again.

VR fitness is also a type of aerobic exercise which means it gets your body moving. You can expect to see the same results as you would any other type of aerobic exercise, which can include losing weight, improving heart health and strengthening muscles.

Summary : Are virtual reality workouts a fad or the future?

Virtual reality workouts have begun to grow in popularity. However, it’s hard to say whether this boom in interest is because it’s a new and exciting technology, or because it’s a long-lasting invention that will change how we exercise forever. Of course, only time will tell, but we can look at other fitness fads to predict what the outcome may be. For example, Zumba was another fitness craze that combined both exercise and entertainment, which still remains a popular form of workout today. Therefore, the success of VR fitness may rely on its ability to tap into the market of people who are looking for enjoyable types of exercise that they will want to join in with and stick to for many years to come.
